内容記述 | The modern era, especially from the latter half of the 19th century to the early 20th, had a big development in the fields of natural sciences, industries, and cultures and societies. The industrial and technological developments contributed to increase rich people but sametime new class conflicts and problems were prevailing. Thanks to these social changes, some women were able to appeal that they wanted to reform the social contradictions and to work for the better lives of the common people's. Those women were not born to the aristocrat families but to the middle class families. Thus, they were rather free from the old customs so that they could participate in various new fields directly. They could not only show their potential power of the women's, but to challenge many things : poverty research, public health, nursing care and other human service of social work. Among many women, the most famous ones were : Florence Nightingale (1820-1910) in nursing, Beatrice Webb (1858-1943) in social security, Mary Richmond (1861-1928) in social work education, and Jane Adams (1860-1935) in settlement movement. They were recognized very liberal and independent women in a new era since they could make their own living without the family support. But they had sometimes experienced hardship and trouble because of their challenging spirits and activities. We may call them really excellent pioneers in human services not because of their noble purposes but because of their much pain and trouble. This note is written for an introduction of two outstanding women, Nightingale and Adams, focusing their common personalities and great activities. This will be followed by Chapter 1 "Their childhood and families", Chapter 2 "Taking first steps of their lifework", Chapter 3 "Important values of their works". | |||||
