In my previous studies, ten different kinds of function were identified and were named 'buffering functions' for the adjustment processes of foreign students in Japan. Each of the buffering functions works differently in four stages of time (background, preparation, beginning, and establishing stages), in three life-spheres (family, study, and friendship spheres) and in three social network patterns (monocultural, bicultural and multicultural networks). The adjustment of each foreign student depends on which network is central to the student during the preparation stage, and on which life-sphere is the most central to him/her during the establishing stage.
