内容記述 | A study investigated improvement of English four skills through oral presentation. A survey conducted at the very beginning of the academic year shows that almost all students were eager to improve their skills of speaking and listening after learning English for six years and after cramming English grammar and vocabulary for a year simply for an entrance examination. As college students they were anxious for practical and active English. To realize their desire, students were afforded an opportunity to make presentations in class for the first semester. It was a challenge to the students whose high school teachers focused on a reading skill at the expense of speech. Each group of four students presented, for ten minutes, what they were interested in most or what they were concerned about most. One class selected sports for their subject, and one group, whose topic was wheelchair basketball, discussed how the sport played an important role to enhance the quality of life of disabled persons. Another group dealing with Judo maintained that Judo, a national sport of Japan and an international sport as well, might enable us to establish world peace by means of its mind of deference toward an opponent and observance of the proprieties. For the presentations, students read books pertaining to their topic to collect information; they wrote papers with critical thinking and original views; they practiced reading the papers a great deal; they concentrated on listening to their friends' presentations so that they could answer quizzes afterward. They answered questions from the floor, and some students expressed their ideas and opinions about the topic. A questionnaire was conducted immediately after the presentations. Results indicate that every single student thoroughly enjoyed giving a presentation, because it was a creative work attended with intellectual gratification. Their presentations were a group work, but an individual person had to perform his/her own part. Each student was never lost in a group. They reviewed grammar and made frequent use of an English-English dictionary for sophisticated sentences; they practiced reading, paying minute attention to pace of delivery and tone, and also accuracy and articulation of languages so that their presentations would be much easier to follow; they were able to listen to the presentations more intensely. In the presentations their language skills were never used in isolation, but rather the four skills were integrated. Students averred that they gained confidence in writing, speaking and listening, and that the confidence would enable them to achieve more persuasive performances for the second semester. It is concluded that oral presentation may have some significant effect on improvement of English four skills. | |||||
