| 内容記述 | This paper is an attempt to shed new light on exisbential there coristructions in English from the viewpoint of the mbrphosyntactic status of there. In contrast to the tradition that there is an expletive inserted only for the requirement of the EPP feature of T, we argue that it is a pronominal clitic with substantive meaning. In the course of the discussion, we first critically review previous analyses, and ,point out some of their ciucial problems. After arguing that there is not at [Spec, TP] , a canonical subject position, but adjoined to the head T, we present our analysis in terms of cliticization, and demonstrate that it can provide a straightforward account of an array of facts all of which pose serious problems for previous approaches | |||||
