内容記述 | Two groups from the Japanese Embassy to the United States, on the Kanrinmaru and the Powhatan, in 1860, left an enormous number of documents and journals. In this paper I chose to discuss two of the journals : John M. Brooke's Pacific Cruise and Japanese Adventure,1858-1860 and Sadayuu Tamamushi's Journal of the Voyage to America. These two journals clarify the development of the interrelationship of a Japanese among Americans as seen by a samurai-reportage writer Tamamushi, and that of an American among Japanese as seen by Captain Brooke, while the documents of their counterparts consist of only the units of phenomena of the exotic novelty seen or heard during the journey. Captain Brook was on board the Kanrinmaru, a Japanese vessel. He found himself among samurai naval officers. When he complained no Japanese were on the deck because of a windstorm, he put in his journal, "All Japanese are sick". Manjiro Nakahama is not included here, although he was on constant watch on the deck, and he was a samurai-Japanese. Captain Brooke came to discover the fundamental human relationship through intercourse with the complexity of the samurai society structure in the 27 day voyage to San Francisco. | |||||
