内容記述 More and more universities and colleges in Japan are implementing students' evaluation of courses and teaching through the use of standardized evaluation forms, particularly following a recommendation by the Ministry of Education, Science and Culture in 1995. While Japan has followed many other countries in doing this, the approach has many weaknesses, which has lead to alternative approaches. This article reviews a number of alternative evaluation methods which have become increasingly preferred in western countries. These alternative methods have been motivated both by dissatisfaction with standardized evaluation forms, and by the desire for results that reflect the complexities of teaching. The Teaching Portfolio, originating in Canada, is an approach designed to show effective teaching (e.g. with student work), materials developed by the instructor (syllabi, handouts, assignments, etc.), and evaluations from students, peers, and administrators. Peer Observation allows colleagues and administrators to closely study an instructor's classroom performance and materials systematically over time. Peer Review of Teaching is a more elaborate version of these methods, sometimes performed by entire departments or teams of colleagues. It includes not only portfolios and class observation, but also the review of course materials and an analytical look at the instructor's scholarship of teaching. Classroom Assessment Techniques is a method designed to measure students' cognitive gain, and consists of course-specific exercises to test students' skill development. The final method discussed is Instructor-designed Ratings Instruments, which are based on course objectives, and the activities of the course ; the items address the students' engagement with and performance on course activities, and their achievement in the course. These approaches all acknowledge the complexities of the teaching environment, and may provide the depth and substance of information necessary for instructor and course evaluation in Japanese higher education.
