Plasma very-low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) plus low-density lipoprotein (LDL)-cholesterol concentration was significantly reduced by the standard-concentration (2g/100ml) buckwheat hot-water extract in the rats fed a cholesterol-free diet, although there was no significant difference in this plasma cholesterol concentration in the group fed this buckwheat extract in a cholesterol-loaded diet. Liver triglyceride content was significantly reduced by the ingestion of standard-concentration buckwheat hot-water extract in rats fed a cholesterol-loaded diet. These results suggest that standard-concentration buckwheat hot-water extract exerts a hypocholesterolemic action via the decrease in plasma (VLDL+LDL)-cholesterol concentration in a cholesterol-free diet, and suppresses the liver triglyceride content accumulated in a cholesterol-loaded
