内容記述 Students in high schools and junior colleges all over Japan take part in short-term study tours every year. The numbers of students participating and the number of foreign destinations is increasing as schools compete to attract students with a variety of overseas experiences, and as students seek out these experiences. While much has been written about the "study abroad" experience and its impact on students, and while thousands of guidebooks assist tourists making brief visits to foreign countries, little has been written about short-term student study tours. These trips generally last from a few days to three weeks and include some aspects of both a sightseeing tour and study abroad. The resemblance to tourism may be the short duration, the inclusion of group sightseeing, and the lack of extended formal study. On the other hand, study tours often include features of study abroad such as language study, homestays, and school credit given for successful participation. The challenge, then, for faculty who arrange such programs is to ensure that students do gain the benefits of both types of overseas experience, that in a trip that may only last a week, students go somewhat beyond just being tourists in the country they visit. One key to achieving this goal is designing an effective orientation. In the following paper, we will describe the study tour orientations at one Japanese high school and junior college, and discuss some of the challenges and limitations as well as suggestions for overcoming them.
