| 内容記述 | 内容を基礎とする教育は第二外国語としての英語教育の分野において重要性を増している。内容重視の教育(CBI)に唯一の方法があるわけではない。多くの形式がある。しかし、学生が主要な英語のクラスの準備をする際、このアプローチの効果的側面は大いに記録されている。 CBIを用いた第二外国語としての英語教育は新しい試みであるが、十分に吟味もされている。この論文ではCBIの歴史について、コースの理念と種類について論じる。日本の短期大学の中低部のクラスにおける内容重視教育から生まれた疑問が中心である。このテーマに関する学生との議論や新たな方法についての模索もテーマとなる。 | |||||

| 内容記述 | Content-based instruction (CBI) is becoming an increasingly popular approach to teaching in the field of English as a second language (ESL). As CBI is less a clearly defined method and more of a teaching philosophy, it takes many forms. There is no commonly agreed upon "ideal" amount or type of content that belongs in language classes, but the effectiveness of CBI in preparing ESL students for mainstream content classes is well documented (Pally, 2000 ; Snow & Brinton, 1997 ; Murphy & Stoller, 2001; Stryker & Leaver, 1997; Short, 1991). What has not been examined as closely, is the emerging use of CBI in English as a foreign language (EFL) classes or the other side of the coin, content classes that are taught at least in part in English to EFL students. The curriculum of the Department of International Cultural Studies at Morioka Junior College in Japan is one example. All students in the department are required to take two years of EFL classes. The curriculum also offers three content classes taught in English, one of which is required. In this paper I will briefly describe the development of content- based instruction including the history, rationale, and types of courses. I will focus on the questions raised by the use of sustained content in EFL, as well as the challenges to teaching successful English content classes at a Japanese junior college. Possible ways of meeting these challenges will be discussed and student comments on the topic and suggestions for future research are also included. | |||||
