| 内容記述 | 本論は、ジェイムズ・ジョイスの作品群において、どのように宗教的葛藤と和解が描かれているかを探求している。ジョイスの東方への文学的かつ宗教の旅がキリスト教との和解の前にいかに必要不可欠なものであったかを示すことを目的とする。仏教は、キリスト教の相対するものとして重要な役割を演じているようである。彼は、ダブリンで神智学を通じて仏教に親しんだ。 1903 年に、ジョイスはH. フィールディング= ホール著『ある民族の魂』の書評を書いた。その中でオリエンタルなビルマの雰囲気にどっぷりと浸かりながら、ホールはリチャード・エルマンが注釈しているように、仏教を「戦争を見当違いのものとして脇にやる」「快い哲学」として讃えている(93 頁)。エルネスト・ルナン著『イエスの生涯』を読んで、ジョイスはイエス・キリストの生涯と釈尊のそれを『スティーブン・ヒーロー』のスティーブンの内的独白で比較した。イエスは聖書では独身男として描かれているが、妻帯者ゴータマは妻ヤショダラと一人息子ラーフラとともに語られる。もっともイエスもゴータマも30歳前後に出家した。宗教問題を考えるときでさえ、愛、結婚、家族生活というものが、ジョイスにとっては重要であったようだ。結局のところ、彼は小説を書いて自分の宗教的葛藤を解消したのであった。 | |||||

| 内容記述 | This paper explores how religious conflicts and reconciliation are described in James Joyce's works. It aims to demonstrate how indispensable Joyce's literary and religious journey to the East was before his reconciliation with Christianity. Buddhism seems to have played an important role as a counterpart of Christianity. Joyce became familiar with Buddhism through Theosophy in Dublin. In 1903 he wrote a review for H. Fielding-Hall's The Soul of a People, in which steeping himself in the Oriental Burmese atmosphere, he showed his admiration for Buddhism as "a suave philosophy" "which put war aside as irrelevant" as Richard Ellmann notes(CW 93). Reading Ernest Renan's Vie de Jesus, Joyce compared the portrait of Jesus Christ with that of Gautama Buddha in Stephen Dedalus's interior monologue in Stephen Hero(SH 189-90). Jesus is portrayed as a single man in the Bible while the married man Gautama is narrated together with his wife Yasodhara and their only son Rahula, although both Jesus and Gautama renounced the world around 30. Love, marriage and family life seem to have been very significant for Joyce even considering them as religious matters. He wrote his novels to resolve his religious conflicts after all. | |||||
