| 内容記述 | 金ヶ崎町とアマースト町は、1993年8月国際姉妹都市提携盟約書に署名してから、今年で10年目を迎える。この間、両町は中学生海外研修事業、町役場職員派遣など、精力的に国際交流事業を展開してきた。その中でもユニークな取り組みとして挙げることができるのは、金ヶ崎町立図書館に開設されたアマースト町コーナーと、エミリ・ディキンスン資料センターである。特に後者は、自治体の図書館が日本エミリ・ディキンスン学会と組んで、学術的な特殊コレクションを受け入れるという大変珍しい例である。アマースト町の詩人エミリ・ディキンスンの国内における研究の拠点作りを目指す町の意図を、金ヶ崎町が1979年に宣言した「生涯教育の町」と関連させて考察した。 | |||||

| 内容記述 | The Town of Kanegasaki maintains three requisite advocacies for its policy of being a "garden city, " where people can appreciate both nature and culture such as obtained in large cities. These are lifelong learning, international exchange, and preservation of the bucolic environment. To promote international understanding, the town secures three sister cities in the world, Amherst in the United States, Changchun in China, and Leinefelde in Germany. This paper will focus on the sister-city relationship between Kanegasaki and Amherst. Their relationship was initiated when Valerie Walcott from Amherst, assistant English teacher at Kanegasaki Junior High School, formulated a plan of a study trip to the United States, and took eighteen students to San Francisco, New York, Boston, and Amherst in 1989. Kanegasaki realized that a two-day homestay in Amherst was a wonderful opportunity for the students to learn about everyday American life by gaining direct experience. Kanegasaki's acute perception accelerated a stronger tie with Amherst, which led to an affiliation of a sister city with Amherst in 1993. Kanegasaki understands that global exchange makes a great contribution to lifelong learning. For promotion of international understanding, the municipal library has provided the Amherst Collection which houses books and media materials about the town's history, culture, education, artists and so forth, and the Emily Dickinson Collection, all of which were donated by the Emily Dickinson Society of Japan. This treatise will investigate how significant it is to have Amherst as a sister city for the citizens of Kanegasaki to enhance the understanding of the people of a foreign country. And it will also analyze how meaningful it is to have two collections pertaining to Amherst for the citizens to expand lifelong learning. | |||||
