A ten-day homestay program was an awesome opportunity for the students to learn about everyday American life. The carefully organized program by Edwards who had some knowledge about Japanese culture and Japanese character was a tremendous success. The meaningful experience made the Mayor of Yahaba decide to continue the program. Three consecutive years of a delegation visit to Fremont led to the official signing of a friendship city agreement between Yahaba and Fremont. A student exchange was realized when Fremont sent six delegates to Yahaba in 1993. The community as well as the school played a vital role in forming the delegation by participating in fundraising and selecting students called \"\"ambassadors\"\" with responsibility and respect. The citizens of Fremont believe that meeting people from different cultures will change their lives a great deal, and that by doing so diversity and propserity will be brought to a rather homogeneous society of white middle-class Americans.
