Since then, both cities have enjoyed a great variety of activities ; exchange students from both countries participated in classes, and gave cultural presentations in the schools ; individual homes hosted and entertained both students and adults, thoroughly appreciating the foreign cultures which their guests presented, and also enthusiastically introducing their own cultures to the guests. For the participants, intermingling with the community proved to be a constructive experience which led them to changing their view of foreign countries. Thus mutual understanding and reciprocation have brought the relationship longevity. While in the initial phases of the development mayors and city councils played an influen tial role in the programs in order to make the programs positive and meaningful for the com munities, at present a large number of citizens are involved in them, having full realization of the value of the relationship. Volunteerism is one of the characteristics which they have been devotedly and persistently cultivating through the programs, and the friendship city relationship between the two cities with less than 10,000 inhabitants is far and away the most successful and fruitful program when their size is taken into
