フリモント市と矢巾町との友好都市交流に関する調査研究 The Friendship City Relationship Between Fremont, the United States and Yahaba, Japan 佐藤, 智子 サトウ, トモコ SATO, Tomoko フリモント市 矢巾町 友好都市関係 青少年派遣 文化交流 ホームステイ・プログラム Frement Yahaba friendship city relationship (sister city relationship) student exchange cultural exchange homestay program 1995年の友好都市締結以来7年しか経っていないが、フリモント市と矢巾町の関係は、年を追う毎に密になっている。両市町を結びつけるパイプの一つが、人の交流である。その中でも青少年相互交流は、参加者が年々増加し大きな発展をみせている。特に、人口が5,000人足らずのフリモント市の取り組みは、目を見張るものがある。フリモント市が展開しているプログラムの内容、学校とコミュニティーのプログラムへの関わり、その教育的効果などを検討し、国際交流のひとつのあり方を提示した。 "In 1992 Loren Edwards, (then) assistant language teacher at Yahaba Junior High School, as part of a municipal program of international understanding, took five students to Washington, D.C. and Fremont, Michigan, his hometown. A ten-day homestay program was an awesome opportunity for the students to learn about everyday American life. The carefully organized program by Edwards who had some knowledge about Japanese culture and Japanese character was a tremendous success. The meaningful experience made the Mayor of Yahaba decide to continue the program. Three consecutive years of a delegation visit to Fremont led to the official signing of a friendship city agreement between Yahaba and Fremont. A student exchange was realized when Fremont sent six delegates to Yahaba in 1993. The community as well as the school played a vital role in forming the delegation by participating in fundraising and selecting students called ""ambassadors"" with responsibility and respect. The citizens of Fremont believe that meeting people from different cultures will change their lives a great deal, and that by doing so diversity and propserity will be brought to a rather homogeneous society of white middle-class Americans.
